PROFESSIONAL CLEANING

Caries is the most widespread disease today. It is detected by inspection during examination. The consequence of caries is the loss of tooth substance that must be replaced with a filling, and it occurs as a result of the action of microorganisms in dental plaque that ferment carbohydrates and in doing so create acids that demineralize the enamel, causing decay in the tooth. The occurrence and speed of caries development depends on the quality of tooth structures, saliva pH, the amount of microorganisms, especially Streptococcus mutans, and the amount of dental plaque, an additional breeding ground for bacteria. Microorganisms penetrate through caries into the depth of the tooth, to the pulp, and if caries is not repaired, it spreads and affects the periodontal structures, and pathogenic bacteria spread through the blood to the entire body. The cause of caries is poor hygiene, which produces acids from dental plaque.
Since enamel is made of hydroxylapatite crystals, it dissolves in the acidic medium of saliva, and this damage to the enamel is visible on examination as chalky whitish spots. Fortunately, this demineralization process is reversible, so adding fluoride to damaged areas of the enamel can heal, with modern pastes and without a drill. Also, damage can occur in risk groups of patients and around existing fillings. Particularly at risk are people who have reduced salivation, as a result of taking certain medications, Sjögren’s syndrome, etc. Good hygiene, proper nutrition, regular professional teeth cleaning, check-ups and fluoridation are essential for the prevention of caries.
