Pregnancy and teeth
Instructions for dental care and treatment during pregnancy
It is known that due to the increased action of hormones during pregnancy, there is an increased tendency for gum inflammation. The gums are slightly swollen and very sensitive. If there is insufficient oral care, plaque will stick to the teeth and deposits will form, which are an excellent substrate for bacteria. It is a misconception that a woman necessarily loses a tooth with each pregnancy.
It is equally wrong to avoid visits to the dentist during pregnancy.
Increased salivary acidity during pregnancy, sometimes caused by frequent vomiting and changes in diet, is just one of many factors that favor caries.
In order to prevent this risk of caries, it is necessary to warn future mothers about the necessity of proper oral hygiene and the mandatory removal of dental plaque from the teeth. In addition to a toothbrush and toothpaste, it is necessary to use dental floss and, if necessary, a mouthwash. At the beginning of pregnancy, it is necessary to remove tartar and clean the teeth.
A visit to the dentist in the first three months of pregnancy will give you confidence and a feeling that your teeth and gums are healthy.
Nutrition during pregnancy
It is generally known that consuming sugar results in the formation of cavities. Therefore, make sure not to take sugar between meals.
During pregnancy, the fetus receives everything it needs for development. Therefore, a healthy and varied diet with a sufficient amount and ratio of protein, carbohydrates, fats, calcium, iron, phosphorus, etc. is necessary. An insufficient and monotonous diet can cause disorders and mineralization of milk teeth.
Vomiting during pregnancy
The acidity in the oral cavity that occurs after vomiting should be washed off with water, because it corrodes tooth enamel.
Check-ups
It is necessary to instruct the pregnant woman on effective and proper dental care and tooth protection with fluoride tablets (1 mg during pregnancy). If the pregnant woman needs to take antibiotics due to an illness, the harmfulness of antibiotics from the tetracycline group should be pointed out; they cause permanent tooth pigmentation.
Always consult your doctor before taking any medications, including fluoride.
